9 DAYS FOR LIFE: PRAYER, PENANCE AND PILGRIMAGE, JANUARY 16-24, 2016
On January 22 our nation will mark the 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal throughout the U.S.  Since that tragic decision, more than 57 million children's lives have been lost to abortion, and many suffer that loss -- often in silence.  Join thousands of Catholics across the country in prayer for a Culture of Life from Saturday, January 16, 2016, through Sunday, January 24, 2016.   More information can be found at:  http://www.usccb.org/about/pro-life-activities/january-roe-events/nine-days-of-prayer-penance-and-pilgrimage.cfm

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER AND AWARENESS AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING FEBRUARY 8TH, 2016
The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the International Union of Superiors General has designated February 8 as an annual day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking. February 8 is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan and Italy. Once Josephine was freed, she became a Canossian nun and dedicated her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting the poor and suffering. She was declared a Saint in 2000.

On February 8, Catholics all over the world are encouraged to host or attend prayer services to create greater awareness about this phenomenon. Through prayer, we not only reflect on the experiences of those that have suffered through this affront to human dignity, but also comfort, strengthen, and help empower survivors.

24TH WORLD DAY OF THE SICK, FEBRUARY 11, 2016
Pope Francis invites us to take this opportunity to draw particular close to those amongst us that are ill and to those who care for them.  Pope Francis invites you to read his message, which he has based on the theme:  “Entrusting Oneself to the Merciful Jesus like Mary:  Do whatever he tells you” (Jn 2:5)    A copy of the message of His Holiness, Pope Francis can be read in Addendum #1 for the (24thWorldDayOfSickMessageFromPopeFrancis.pdf)

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING
In 2003, all dioceses in the United States were required to institute safe environment programs.  One component of these programs, is training for all children and youth in Catholic Schools and parish Faith Formation programs.

In the past, training in the Diocese of Marquette included children in grades K-8.  Many parishes did not have high school faith formation and for those parishes with high school youth ministry, it was decided to accept the Michigan Model taught in public schools as their training.

With Confirmation now in high school, parishes will continue to have, or be re-establishing, high school faith formation to prepare for the sacrament.  It was decided to reassume our responsibility to train our youth ourselves, and more importantly, with training based on Catholic teaching.  We will be using the high school component of the Formation in Christian Chastity program, whose elementary components are being used for our parish K-8 children.

Implementation is planned for fall 2016.  Specifics on program implantation will be sent to faith formation coordinators and safe environment coordinators.

REDISCOVER JESUS FREE LENT PROGRAM
Matthew Kelly and Dynamic Catholic are offering a free on-line Lent Program using his book Rediscover Jesus which many parishes distributed at Christmas.  Beginning Ash Wednesday and continuing through the 40 days of Lent, participants will receive daily inspirational emails with a short video from Matthew and one of our incredible Dynamic Catholic Team members.  After Matthew introduces one of the forty chapters in his new book, one of the team members will share a brief, personal reflection that will encourage you to integrate the chapter into your life.

DIOCESAN CONFIRMATION
 Registration for the annual diocesan celebration of Confirmation is now open.  You can access it by clicking here. The Sacrament of Confirmation will take place on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at St. Peter Cathedral at 3:00 pm ET. All are welcome to this Mass which is specifically celebrated for the following groups of people who have not yet been confirmed:

1.Youth who will be in the 11th or 12th grade during the 2015-2016 school year;
2.Young adults in college who are seeking the Sacrament of Confirmation;
3.Those adults in our RCIA programs who have been baptized and raised Catholic, that is, people who have received both the Sacrament of Baptism and Holy Communion. Previously, the bishop granted faculties to confirm at the Easter Vigil those people who have been baptized and raised Catholic. Now, the Bishop, as the ordinary minister of the Sacrament of Confirmation, would like those who have been baptized and raised Catholic to come to the Cathedral so that he can confirm them.

If anyone is requesting to be confirmed that does not meet the above criteria, please refer them to your pastor as any special requests must be submitted in writing to the Office of the Bishop by the pastor.

The registration form was emailed to all pastors, faith formation coordinators, and parishes the first week of January. If you have any questions please contact Denise Foye at dfoye@dioceseofmarquette.org, (800)562-8745 ext. 130 or (906)227-9130.

This collection is for the benefit of the Syriac Catholic Diocese of Our Lady of Deliverance in the U.S. and Canada. PARISH SECRETARY/BOOKKEEPER WORKSHOP

(Please publish this announcement in your parish bulletin)

The Black & Indian Mission collection will be taken up in our parish the weekend of January 30/31. This national collection has been held in parishes throughout the country for 130 years and exists to help diocesan communities build the Church and preach the Gospel of Jesus among the African American, Native American and Alaska Native people of God. The funds collected are distributed as grants to dioceses in the United States, including the Diocese of Marquette, to support and strengthen evangelization programs, such as training catechists in faith formation, assisting teachers to help children learn, sponsoring events to support the Christian life in culturally-appropriate ways, and encouraging vocations to the priesthood and religious life.  Please be generous to this collection at Masses on January 30 and 31. Our Diocese is currently receiving $75,000 from the Black & Indian National Collection, benefitting eight different Native American evangelization programs in the Upper Peninsula:
