ACTION ALERTS SIGN UP TO KEEP INFORMED ON PERTINENT ISSUES
To help keep Catholics informed of pertinent issues on both the State and National level, I encourage Catholics to sign up for notices from the Michigan Catholic Conference and the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops.  These vehicles issue timely notices and information on issues pertinent to the Catholic Church.

If you have not already signed up for these action alerts, I encourage you to do so.  I would also ask you to help me spread the word about these valuable resources that help to keep Catholics informed and enable them to take timely action on important issues.

You may sign up for alerts from the Michigan Catholic Conference by following this link:

You may sign up for alerts from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops by following this link:

PRAYERS AND ASSISTANCE FOR OUR PERSECUTED BROTHERS AND SISTERS
The Bishops of the United States are working together with the USCCB to address international freedom with a special emphasis on the persecution of Christians and other religious minorities, particularly in Syria and Iraq.  They need our prayers and assistance more than ever.

As part of their efforts, they will work towards urging our government to increase its humanitarian assistance to those fleeing persecution and war; will work to increase our own humanitarian assistance efforts (including through raising funds for organizations such as Catholic Relief Services, Aid to the Church in Need, the Catholic Near East Welfare Association and the Knights of Columbus); and by strengthening ecumenical and interreligious collaboration here in the United States, so that we may better stand together in solidarity, advocacy and support.

Advent would be a good time to lift up the plight of persecuted Christians in prayer.   You will find several sample Prayers of the Faithful that you should feel free to adapt for use in your parishes.  Please refer to Addendum #1 - Prayers of the Faithful.

HELP PROMOTE PRAYER FOR OUR SEMINARIANS, AND VOCATIONS
In the upcoming December issue of The U.P. Catholic, a 8.5x11" version of the vocations poster will be inserted.  Please consider alerting your parishioners to this opportunity to pray daily for our seminarians, and for more vocations to the priesthood.  Encourage people to post it in a prayer corner, or in their kitchen.  Copies are also going to our Catholic schools for distribution to the students there.  There are a limited number of additional copies available, if you're interested, please contact Fr. Ben Hasse, benjhasse@yahoo.com.  First come, first serve, until they're gone!  Please refer to Addendum #2 for a pdf of the mini-poster.

BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENTS
FOR JANUARY 8:
NEW COMBINED COLLECTION
Next week all parishes in the Diocese of Marquette will be taking up the 2017 “Mission Collection” This new collection combines four previously separate collections into one. The new combined “Mission Collection” supports four different outreach ministries to the Universal Church, as listed below.

PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH
The Society for the Propagation of the Faith is vital to the missionaries serving in 1,111 dioceses throughout Asia, Africa, parts of Latin America and Europe, and on the Islands of the Pacific. Your generosity makes it possible for local priests, religious, and catechists to reach out to communities, families and children in desperate need, bringing the light of Christ to the darkest of circumstances covering more than half the globe.

SOLIDARITY FUND FOR THE CHURCH IN AFRICA
While the Church in Africa is growing, many still lack access to basic resources and pastoral care. Many suffer due to high rates of poverty and unemployment, illiteracy, and poor education. The Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa supports pastoral projects that foster lasting peace and reconciliation in a continent often marked by division and tension.

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS
“Home Missions” is the name for dioceses and parishes in the United States, including its territories and former territories, which cannot provide basic pastoral services to Catholics without outside help. Basic pastoral services include Mass and sacraments, religious education, and ministry training for priests, deacons, religious sisters and lay people.

BLACK & INDIAN MISSIONS
The Black and Indian Mission Collection exists to help local African American and Native American diocesan communities throughout the United States spread the Good News of Jesus Christ and respond to real and pressing needs. This collection advances causes important to native and African American Catholics.
