Most Reverend John F. Doerfler

WEEKEND MASS ATTENDANCE COUNTS
Bishop John has requested that all parishes submit a total weekly weekend Mass Attendance count (for all Vigil and Sunday Masses combined) each week, beginning the first weekend of July, 2017.  The weekly Mass Attendance counts will give us a baseline for our Mass attendance as we work together to increase Mass attendance through evangelization efforts discussed in Bishop John’s Pastoral Letter on Evangelization, entitled:  “Transforming Fire: A New Pentecost to form Spirit-Filled Evangelizers”.  The pastoral letter is due to be released on Pentecost.  An email reminder will be sent to the pastors, secretaries and bookkeepers prior to the start of the weekly Mass attendance count requirements, which will include a link to the online form that will be used to collect the data.  If you have any questions, please contact the Office of the Bishop at (906)-227-9115.

PRAYER INTENTION CARD MAILING FROM THE BISHOP
Coming up in mid-June, the fourth annual “Prayer Intention Card” mailing from the Bishop’s Office will be direct-mailed to all registered households. Helping to fulfill one of his primary obligations, to pray for the people of the Diocese of Marquette, Bishop John Doerfler invites parishioners to send personal prayer requests. Returned prayer cards are kept in his private chapel, where he will pray for the intentions for the next year. Please encourage your parishioners to respond. A bulletin announcement is attached for your convenience.

CHILD PROTECTION RESOURCES FOR "PARISH TWINNING/SISTER-TWINNING/SISTER-PARISH" PROGRAMS
Dioceses and eparchies across the United States have endeavored to fulfill the Charter’s “Promise to Protect, Pledge to Heal” for many years. Though there is always more to do, we have made great progress in our efforts to effectively prevent abuse, respond to allegations, and bring healing to victims/survivors. The Secretariat of Child and Youth Protection, in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services, has created a series of three new resources that provide our dioceses with the opportunity to share what we have learned with parishes in the developing world. Specifically, these resources offer our dioceses/eparchies guidance on how to introduce the topic of child abuse to diocesan “parish-twinning” or “sister-parish” programs in other countries.  Please see Addenda 1-4 for more information:  Addendum #1; Addendum #2; Addendum #3; and Addendum 4.

CRUCIFIX/CORPUS NEEDED
The chaplain at the prison is looking for a crucifix/corpus that would be used in the chapel. If anyone has a wall-sized crucifix/corpus you would be willing to donate or sell at a modest price to the prison, please contact Deacon Dennis Maki.  We will need to remove it after each service so it shouldn’t be too large. Just the corpus would be okay too – a cross will be made at the prison to fit the corpus.

RETREAT AT MARYGROVE
A retreat is being held at Marygrove from Sunday evening, June 25 through lunch on Thursday, June 29.  Cathryn Torgerson will be presenting a series of talks on the Goodness of God, using lessons from Scripture culminating in our ultimate destiny at the Wedding Banquet of the Lamb.  Ms. Torgerson holds a Masters Degree in Theology from Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit, has worked for many years in parish ministry, focusing on evangelization and catechesis with adults and teens

This retreat will be open to all parish workers, Faith Formation Coordinators – catechists, youth group leaders, RCIA team members, paid or volunteer, clergy or lay – all will benefit from Cathy’s infectious joy and brilliant insights into the Story of Faith. There will be time for group discussion, as well as liturgical and private prayer, along with opportunities for the Sacrament of Penance.

The cost of the week retreat is $185. To encourage folks to sign up for this first-ever event, we’d like to offer a special: if the parish is willing to pay at least $50 per registrant, Marygrove will reduce the cost of the retreat by $35. So, if the parish pays $50, the retreatant will pay $100. If the parish pays $75, the retreatant will pay $75. If the parish pays $150, the retreatant will not be charged.

If you have any questions about this retreat, please contact me at Marygrove, 906-644-2771, or email me, ttfergu@hotmail.com.
