TIME OF THE EASTER VIGIL
Please be advised that Bishop Doerfler has determined that the Easter Vigil (March 31, 2018) Mass times this year will begin no earlier than 9:00 PM Eastern time and 8:00 PM Central time. If you have any questions, please contact Deacon Tom Foye at tfoye@dioceseofmarquette.org.

LAY MINISTERS GIVING BLESSINGS DURING COMMUNION
This issue has come up recently and Bishop John would like to standardize this procedure across the Diocese.  The Church teaches that these blessings should be discouraged because lay ministers cannot give blessings within a liturgical context.  However, this presents a difficulty when people come to the Lay Minister with arms crossed expecting a blessing.  Bishop John’s recommendation is for the Lay Ministers to say, “Receive Jesus in your heart!” without making the hand gestures of a blessing.  Feel free to adopt this as a parish practice.

A good reference to this question can be found at this link:  http://www.madisoncatholicherald.org/guestcolumn/2517-matenaer.html

If you have any questions, please contact Deacon Tom Foye at tfoye@dioceseofmarquette.org.

RED FLAG REPORTING INSIGHTS
Please take a moment to read the information below from Red Flag Reporting. Recent news events are certainly disturbing and the below provides practical insights.

#NoMore – How to Respond to a Harasser

Hardly a day goes by without hearing about another prominent person being held accountable for improper workplace behavior. While your organization certainly has taken such issues seriously (or Red Flag Reporting wouldn’t be in place), many wonder “what should I do if I find myself in the midst of being harassed?” Here are some practical steps to consider, as quoted from HR Daily Advisor:

  1. Use strong body language. Look the harasser in the eyes; speak in a strong, clear voice. Show assertiveness and strength through your voice, facial expressions, and body language.
  2. Project confidence and calm. Even if you do not feel that way, it is important to appear calm, serious, and confident.
  3. Do not apologize, make an excuse, or ask a question. You do not need to say sorry for how you feel or what you want. Be firm.
  4. You do not need to respond to diversions, questions, threats, blaming, or guilt-tripping. Stay on your own agenda. Stick to your point. Repeat your statement or leave.
  5. Decide when you’re done. Success is how you define it. If you said what you needed to say and you’re ready to leave, do so.

While not exhaustive, this list is pragmatic. Simple actions lead to significant results. If you have concerns about unethical or non-emergency unsafe behavior, contact your management or us. We are here to help.
