PARISH/SCHOOL FINANCE COUNCIL REPORTING REMINDERS
PARISH AND SCHOOL SECRETARY/BOOKKEEPER WORKSHOP 2020
- Detailed minutes should be kept to document all key decisions made by Parish/School Finance Councils. The minutes need to clearly indicate the Finance Council’s review and approval of periodic financial statements (balance sheet and income statement as well as budget to actual), check register, annual budget, pay rates, and major expenditures.
- As an additional level of control over cash disbursements, it is recommended all Parish/School Finance Councils receive a detailed check register identifying all disbursement made since the last meeting. The listing should identify the check number, date, payee, and amount.
The annual Parish and School Secretary/Bookkeeper Workshop has been scheduled for Thursday, May 7th, 2020—so mark your calendars now to attend. Additional registration details will be sent to all parishes in the coming months. We look forward to seeing you this spring!
DOCUMENT PRESERVATION REMINDER
The U.S. Justice Department has directed Bishop Doerfler to ensure that all data/documents related to the open investigation of sexual misconduct involving minors are preserved. Our attorney has prepared a letter listing all documents that are to be preserved in Addendum #9
. Please read this document and take great care to ensure that none of the documents listed in the letter are destroyed. If you have any questions regarding the preservation or destruction of any documents, please contact Tim Thomas in the Department of Administration & Finance. Remember, always err on the side of caution regarding document preservation.
MAXIMUM 403(b) CONTRIBUTIONS FOR 2020
The maximum contribution for 2020 will increase to $19,500, unless the employee is age 50 or over. Members over 50 years of age will be allowed an additional “catch-up” contribution of $6,500.
RED FLAG REPORTING INSIGHTS
Please take a moment to read the information below from Red Flag Reporting. It is a healthy reminder on how we can maintain a positive work environment.
STOP Harassment in Its Tracks
While we all know that harassment in any form is not acceptable, many of us do not know what to do when we witness it happening to others. These simple steps will help you to STOP inappropriate behavior:
- Stay close to the target of harassment because an aggressor is less likely to act when there is a witness,
- Take notes as soon as you have an opportunity so that key facts are remembered,
- Offer support to the victim; and
- Proclaim (report) the incident to a supervisor. If you are not comfortable telling a supervisor, use your hotline. These simple actions can make a tremendously positive difference.
Remember, if you have concerns about unethical or non-emergency unsafe behavior, contact your management or us. We are here to help. Whether you identify financial, personnel, safety or other concerns, contact your management team or contact us (anonymously or not) at: www.RedFlagReporting.com
As a reminder, our client code for filing a report is 8005629745.

IRA GIVING & NEW RETIREMENT LEGISLATION FOR 2020
Those aged 70 ½ or older can give tax-free charitable gifts for regular offertory, UPCSA, or other donations to the Church from traditional and Roth IRA accounts. New retirement legislation for 2020 increases the age when IRA owners can take taxable withdrawals, but does NOT impact the age at which an IRA owner can make a qualified charitable distribution
to benefit the Church. This may be confusing to your parishioners who make gifts to the Church through their IRA. Please refer to the insert in the Bulletin Announcements Section or use Addendum #11
to see our December newsletter. Subscribe here
if you are not receiving it in your inbox. Like what you see? Use all or parts of the news in your bulletin, website and social media. Invite people to subscribe. We do not share subscriber emails outside of our organization.

IRA GIVING & NEW RETIREMENT LEGISLATION FOR 2020
Do you make charitable gifts from your IRA?
A new retirement law will take effect on January 1, 2020 that need NOT impact your charitable giving from your IRA. The new law, “Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act increases the age retirees must begin taking taxable withdrawals from their retirement savings from age 70½ to 72. The new law, however, does NOT increase the age an IRA owner can take a qualified charitable distribution
(QCD). That age remains at 70½ .
This means that, if you are age 70½ or older, you can make charitable distributions from your IRA to the Church
. This is a tax-saving way to support the Church since the distribution goes directly to the Church (a charitable entity) without the IRA owner incurring taxable income.
If you have an IRA, and are 70½ or older, please consider using this asset to support the Church. You can direct your gift to be used for your regular offertory and/or special gifts such as a Catholic school, endowment fund, Church capital campaign, or UPCSA.
For assistance with charitable giving to the Church, contact Terri Gadzinski, Diocese of Marquette at 906/227-9108 or email her at email@example.com
Contact your IRA administrator to make a charitable distribution from your IRA to the Church.
MISSION COMBINED COLLECTION - JANUARY 11-12TH, 2020
Black & Indian Missions
The Black and Indian Mission Collection exists to help local African American and Native American diocesan communities throughout the United States spread the Good News of Jesus Christ and respond to real and pressing needs. This collection advances causes important to native and African American Catholics.
Catholic Home Missions
“Home Missions” is the name for dioceses and parishes in the United States, including its territories and former territories, which cannot provide basic pastoral services to Catholics without outside help. Basic pastoral services include Mass and sacraments, religious education, and ministry training for priests, deacons, religious sisters and lay people.
Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa
While the Church in Africa is growing, many still lack access to basic resources and pastoral care. Many suffer due to high rates of poverty and unemployment, illiteracy, and poor education. The Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa supports pastoral projects that foster lasting peace and reconciliation in a continent often marked by division and tension.
Propagation of the Faith
The Society for the Propagation of the Faith is vital to the missionaries serving in 1,111 dioceses throughout Asia, Africa, parts of Latin America and Europe, and on the Islands of the Pacific. Your generosity makes it possible for local priests, religious, and catechists to reach out to communities, families and children in desperate need, bringing the light of Christ to the darkest of circumstances covering more than half the globe.
