NATIONAL CHURCH COMBINED COLLECTION - AUGUST 15/16TH, 2020
All parishes in the Diocese of Marquette will be taking up the 2020 National Church Collection on August 15/16th, 2020. The National Church Collection supports the following outreach ministries to the Universal Church: the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, the National Retirement Fund for Religious, and the Catholic University Collection. Parish bookkeepers are advised to divide unspecified National Church fund donations evenly between the three individual collections using the Collection Counting Sheet. Bookkeepers may then complete their Combined Collection Transmittal forms to include with their payment to the Diocese. These collection resources can be found at dioceseofmarquette.org/administrativepolicies. Please make checks out to “Diocese of Marquette-National Church Collection.”
Please see the Bulletin Announcements section for an announcement that can be placed in your parish bulletins to promote this collection. Parishes may also print and use the Addendum #1 National Church Collection flyer as an optional bulletin insert. Thank you for your attention to this very important matter.
ST. JOSEPH ASSOCIATION (GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY) COLLECTION 9 - SEPTEMBER 5/6TH, 2020
Due to the suspension of Masses in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual Good Shepherd Collection was postponed earlier this year. The collection has been rescheduled to be taken up at all parishes on September 5/6th, 2020 over Labor Day weekend.
Because of the unprecedented collection cancellation, a small number of parishioners donated to this collection using designated collection envelopes. Pastors and Pastoral Coordinators should thank those who donated towards the local priest retirement fund and encourage those who were not able to donate to support the collection by marking a blank envelope for the benefit of the “Good Shepherd Sunday Collection” and dropping it in the collection basket on September 5/6th, 2020. Parishioners may also elect to donate to the St. Joseph Association online by visiting dioceseofmarquette.org/giving.
New materials to promote the collection can be found in Addendum #2 and were emailed to all pastors, associate pastors, and pastoral coordinators on July 8th, 2020. Please see the Bulletin Announcements section for announcements which can be placed in upcoming parish bulletins to promote this collection.
UPCSA WEEKEND IS SEPTEMBER 26/27TH, 2020

The “record of pledges” spreadsheet, used to transmit your parish member pledge and payment info to the diocese, will be emailed to your parish by late August. The UPCSA handbook, containing timelines, sample letters, and other useful information you need will be available on our website by September at www.dioceseofmarquette.org/upcsa. UPCSA goals have been emailed to parishes already and are also on the diocesan website. Returned prayer cards are kept in his private chapel, where he will pray for your intentions for the next year.
EASTER DUTY REQUIREMENTS DISPENSED FOR 2020
Due to the health risks and restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic Bishop John Doerfler has granted a dispensation to all the faithful of the Diocese of Marquette from the annual obligation to receive Holy Communion and make a sacramental confession. Those who are unable to make a sacramental confession and to receive Holy Communion are encouraged to make a Perfect Act of Contrition and to offer an Act of Spiritual Communion.
ST. JOSEPH ASSOCIATION/GOOD SHEPHERD COLLECTION ANNOUNCEMENTS
Bulletin Insert #1
For weekend of August 22nd/23rd, 2020
The Diocese of Marquette is blessed with many senior (retired) priests (those who are no longer assigned to a parish). These men make present Christ, the Good Shepherd, and continue to give of themselves in countless ways of service for which we are grateful.
As is the case with many pension plans in today’s world, our priests’ retirement program is not fully funded. On September 5/6th, our Diocese will take up a special collection to support our priests’ retirement and help remedy the shortfall in the St. Joseph Association.
Due to the suspension of Masses in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual Good Shepherd Collection was postponed earlier this year. We appreciate the generous gifts made using designated collection envelopes this spring and encourage those who were not able to donate earlier this year to support the collection by marking a blank envelope for the benefit of the “Good Shepherd Collection” and dropping it in the collection basket on September 5/6th, 2020. Parishioners can also donate to the St. Joseph Association online by visiting dioceseofmarquette.org/giving.
Bulletin Insert #2
For weekend of August 29th/30th, 2020
Retired priests of the Diocese of Marquette receive health and automobile insurance and a monthly pension from the St. Joseph Association, the diocesan priest retirement fund. Diocesan priests live independently during their retirement, and they use their pension for basic needs, such as food, housing and transportation. Parish assessments, plus growth in the St. Joseph Association, have fallen short of what is needed to provide necessary benefits to our retired priests.
All parishes and missions in the Diocese of Marquette will participate in a special collection on September 5/6th to help “bridge the gap.” It is essential that we ensure adequate retirement and health coverage in the years ahead for our priests, especially in these uncertain times.
Due to the suspension of Masses in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual Good Shepherd Collection was postponed earlier this year. We appreciate the generous gifts made using designated collection envelopes this spring and encourage those who were not able to donate earlier this year to support the collection at next weekends’ Masses.
Bulletin Insert #3
For collection weekend – September 5th/6th, 2020
This weekend all parishes and missions in the Diocese of Marquette are holding a Good Shepherd Sunday special collection to support our priests’ retirement fund, called the St. Joseph Association. This collection directly benefits priests of the Diocese of Marquette and is separate from the annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious, which supports retired clergy and sisters of religious orders across America.
Due to the suspension of Masses in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual Good Shepherd Collection was postponed earlier this year. Thank you to those who have already contributed to this collection earlier this year. I encourage those who have not donated to this fund to please prayerfully reflect on how you can best help support our own priests’ retirement by marking a blank envelope for the benefit of the “Good Shepherd Collection” and dropping it in the collection basket on September 5/6th, 2020. Parishioners can also donate to the St. Joseph Association online by visiting dioceseofmarquette.org/giving.
Bulletin Insert #4
Two weeks following collection weekend – September 19th/20th, 2020
On Labor Day weekend, our parish and all parishes and missions throughout our diocese took up a special collection to support our priests’ retirement fund, known as the St. Joseph Association. Collectively, our parishioners have raised $_AMOUNT_ to date. We truly appreciate your support. If you were unable to donate last weekend, you may still support our retired priests by returning your envelope marked for the benefit of the “Good Shepherd Collection” in today’s collection or by dropping it off at the parish office.
